Atlas still searches every new room.

The nine-year-old German Shepherd moves slowly along the perimeter, nose working, body angled toward walls and corners as he traces a path around the unfamiliar indoor run.

It resembles the kind of systematic movement that once belonged to his life as a detection K-9.

But Atlas can no longer see most of what is around him.

After losing much of his vision following an injury sustained while working, ordinary objects have become obstacles. In an unfamiliar room, he sometimes brushes a shoulder against a kennel fixture or bumps lightly into something he did not detect in time.

Nova watches from behind.

The seven-year-old Labrador Retriever, herself a former detection dog, does not rush ahead to guide him.

She simply follows.

And when Atlas begins heading somewhere that will take him into an obstacle, Nova closes the small distance between them and presses her shoulder gently against his side.

Atlas changes direction.

Then he continues his slow search.

Atlas Had Spent Years Using His Senses for a Job

Before entering the rescue program, Atlas had worked as a detection K-9.

His training depended on controlled searching, persistence, and the ability to work through an environment using far more than vision alone.

Then an injury changed his life.

Atlas lost most of his sight.

The exact functional impact of vision loss can vary greatly between dogs, but for Atlas the consequence became particularly obvious whenever his environment changed.

A familiar space was manageable.

A new one required investigation.

So when Atlas was moved into an unfamiliar indoor run, he did not simply find a bed and remain there.

He began moving.

Along one wall.

Toward a corner.

Across another section of the room.
