The room went quiet.

The woman stood completely still.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she asked, “Someone like me?”

The manager realized what she'd implied.

But instead of apologizing, she doubled down.

“I'm referring to the circumstances.”

“Which circumstances?”

“Your unusual appearance, the size of the check, and the fact that you insist on being served without completing the proper verification.”

The Black woman glanced toward the young teller who had originally welcomed her.

The teller's eyes were filled with distress.

She had already begun checking the transaction.

She had confirmed the appointment.

She had opened the foundation's account information.

And she had been preparing to refer the large deposit through the bank's established review process when the manager interrupted.

Now she stood silently, afraid to contradict her superior.

The Black woman looked back toward the manager.

“Your employee was verifying the account before you took the check away from her.”

The manager snapped, “She doesn't have authority to approve this transaction.”

“I never asked her to approve it.”

“Then what do you want?”

“I want you to verify it.”

The manager gave another dismissive laugh.

Then looked toward the customers watching.

“People really think they can walk into a financial institution with any piece of paper and demand millions of dollars.”

The Black woman's expression changed.

“I'm not asking you to give me money.”

The manager frowned.

“Excuse me?”

“I'm depositing a valid check into an authorized charitable account.”

“That remains to be established.”

“Then establish it.”

For a moment, the manager seemed unable to find an answer.

Then she looked down at the check.

And made a decision that would eventually cost her far more than her position at the branch.

She gripped opposite sides of the document.
