The regional director's expression grew increasingly troubled.

When the teller finished, she lowered her head.

“I know I should have done more.”

The CEO studied her.

Then spoke quietly.

“You submitted concerns through the official process?”

The teller nodded.

“Twice.”

“Do you have the acknowledgment numbers?”

“Yes.”

The CEO looked toward the director.

“Please arrange for independent compliance to retrieve those reports and their handling history.”

He nodded.

“Immediately.”

Then the CEO turned back toward the young woman.

“Why didn't you report it again?”

The teller's lips trembled.

“Because I was afraid of losing my job.”

For several seconds, the CEO remained silent.

Then she looked toward the glass wall overlooking the lobby.

Customers were beginning to resume their business.

Employees moved between counters.

The marble floors gleamed.

The bank looked respectable.

Orderly.

Successful.

But beneath that polished surface, a young employee had been afraid to tell the truth.

The CEO slowly turned back.

“That's something I need to change.”

The teller stared.

For the first time, she allowed herself a small, uncertain hope.

Then the CEO added something that surprised her.

“But I also need to know whether other employees saw the same behavior and whether our systems failed to protect customers who complained.”

The teller nodded.

“There are others.”

The regional director looked up sharply.

“Others?”

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Yes.”

The CEO took a breath.

“Then this review needs to go beyond one conversation.”

She looked toward the regional director.

“And beyond one branch manager.”

The director swallowed.

For the first time, he understood that the new chief executive wasn't simply demanding punishment for an employee who insulted her.

She was asking whether the bank's internal structure had allowed the behavior to continue.

And the answer might implicate people far above the woman who tore the check.

Including him.
