A satisfied private banking client might complete a survey.

A customer falsely accused of fraud might leave and never respond to one.

And if complaints were closed under broad categories like customer misunderstanding, the branch could appear successful even while treating certain people badly.

The CEO watched his face.

Then spoke quietly.

“A branch can have excellent satisfaction scores among the people it chooses to serve.”

The director lowered his eyes.

She continued.

“That doesn't tell us what happens to everyone else.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she looked toward the young teller.

“Thank you for being honest.”

The teller nodded.

Her eyes were wet.

The CEO continued.

“We're going to arrange for you to speak with an independent investigator. Your employment should not be threatened because you reported concerns in good faith.”

The young woman's lips trembled.

“Thank you.”

The CEO shook her head.

“You shouldn't have to thank me for that.”

She paused.

“It's what the institution should have provided in the first place.”

The teller lowered her eyes again.

Then whispered, “I really like working here.”

The CEO studied her.

“I believe you.”

The young woman took a shaky breath.

“I just don't want customers leaving this building feeling like they don't belong.”

For the first time that morning, the CEO smiled.

Not broadly.

Just a small, genuine smile.

“Neither do I.”

After the teller left, the regional director sat in silence.

The CEO looked toward him.

“I want your full cooperation with the review.”

He nodded.

“Of course.”

“And I want the board's independent oversight committee informed.”

His expression tightened.

“Madam, do you think that's necessary for one branch incident?”

The CEO stared at him.

For several seconds, he seemed to regret the question.

Then she answered.
