That had been the joke.

He had held the money toward her and smiled in front of his guests.

“Three thousand if you can say something impressive in Thai.”

He expected embarrassment.

The table had expected entertainment.

The waitress had stood perfectly still in her black uniform with one hand resting lightly against the back of an empty chair.

Then she looked directly at the billionaire.

And answered in Thai.

Not with a greeting.

Not with gratitude.

With the sentence he had spoken less than two minutes earlier when he thought she could not understand him.

“Would you like me to repeat the part where you said the staff would lose their medical coverage six weeks after the acquisition?”

Nobody moved.

The billionaire’s smile vanished.

The older Thai investor sitting opposite him lowered his glass.

The younger executive beside that investor turned slowly toward the billionaire.

The waitress continued in the same calm language.

“Or the part where you said the workers would be told the cuts were temporary until the press stopped paying attention?”

The billionaire’s fingers tightened around the cash.

“What did you just say?”

He switched to English.

The waitress switched with him.

“You heard me.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Where did you learn Thai?”

The question revealed more than he intended.

Not Did you understand us?

He already knew.

The waitress looked toward the three thousand dollars.

Then back at him.

“My mother is Thai.”

The older investor closed his eyes briefly.

The billionaire stared.

The waitress added:

“She raised me speaking it.”

The younger executive whispered something in Thai.

The billionaire snapped toward him.

“English.”

The waitress nearly smiled.

For the previous hour, he had insisted the private conversation remain in Thai whenever he wanted the restaurant staff excluded from it.

Now he wanted English.

The older investor placed his napkin on the table.

“This meeting is over.”

The billionaire’s face changed.

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“We haven’t finished.”

The older man looked toward the waitress.

Then toward the billionaire.

“I believe we have.”

The billionaire laughed sharply.

“You’re going to walk away from a nine-figure transaction because a waitress misunderstood a private conversation?”

The waitress felt something cold move through her stomach.

There it was.

Not denial.

Misunderstanding.

He was going to make language itself the problem.

The older investor answered in English.

“She did not misunderstand.”

The billionaire turned.

“You don’t know what she heard.”

“I know what I said.”

The older investor pushed his chair back.

“And I know what you said.”

The younger executive stood too.
