Those quiet periods mattered because they gave his body a break from repeated arousal.

Molly's role became less constant.

She did not need to press against him every hour.

Sometimes she simply slept nearby.

Then the Kennel Row Erupted Again

A dog barked down the hall.

Another answered.

Within moments, the noise built.

Cooper lifted his head.

His body tightened.

He started moving.

One circle.

Then another.

Faster.

Molly stood.

She crossed the small distance between them and turned her body alongside his.

Her ribs pressed against his flank.

Cooper kept circling.

Molly stayed with him.

Another loop.

Then another.

His pace dropped.

The turns widened.

His paws stopped scrambling.

Finally, Cooper came to a standstill.

Molly stopped beside him.

For a few seconds, neither dog moved.

Then Cooper lowered his head.

The barking outside the kennel had not disappeared completely.

But the spinning had.

Molly Still Steps In When the Circles Start

No one can say with certainty why Molly responds the way she does.

No one can say exactly what Cooper experiences when the shelter suddenly erupts in barking.

The rescue only knows the pattern they keep seeing.

Noise builds.

Cooper circles.

The circles get faster.

Molly presses herself against his side and moves with him.

Then the pace begins to fall.

For now, staff are working toward a future where Cooper has more ways to recover and fewer reasons to reach that point at all.

But when the kennel row becomes loud and Cooper starts tracing those frantic circles again, Molly still does the same peculiar thing.

She puts her body beside his.

She follows the circle.

And she stays there until, one slow step at a time, Cooper finally stops.
