The homeowner slowly looked back at the officer.

“You received a complaint that I’m trespassing in my own backyard?”

“You heard me.”

“I heard you.”

The officer stepped closer.

“Then cooperate.”

The homeowner’s mother stood.

“Officer—”

The homeowner raised one hand toward her.

Not now.

He knew escalation.

He knew what panic looked like after being translated into a police report.

He knew how quickly one sudden gesture could become aggressive movement.

He knew because beginning Monday morning, understanding exactly those details would become his full-time responsibility.

The officer did not know that yet.

The homeowner wanted to keep it that way for a little longer.

He asked:

“What exactly do you need?”

The officer looked toward the grill.

“Identification.”

“My wallet is inside.”

“Don’t move.”

The homeowner did not.

The officer stared.

“Well?”

“You told me not to move.”

Someone behind them made a small sound that might have been a suppressed laugh.

The officer’s jaw flexed.

“You think this is funny?”

“No.”

“You think you’re clever?”

“No.”

“Then turn around.”

The homeowner’s expression changed.

“Why?”

The officer glanced toward the guests.

“Because you’re being detained until I determine whether you belong here.”

The homeowner looked directly at him.

“You can determine that without putting your hands on me.”

The second officer shifted uncomfortably.

The lead officer took another step.

“I decide how this goes.”

There it was.

Not public safety.

Control.

The homeowner glanced toward the body camera mounted on the officer’s chest.

A tiny indicator showed it was active.

Good.

At least that.

He returned his gaze to the officer.

“Then I suggest you make careful decisions.”

The officer smiled.

Wrong thing to say.

He reached toward the homeowner’s shoulder.

The homeowner did not move.

The officer grabbed him anyway.

A startled murmur spread through the guests.

The officer shoved him backward against the edge of the serving table.

Paper plates toppled.

One aluminum tray slid several inches.

A bottle of barbecue sauce fell and splashed red across the grass.

The homeowner caught himself against the table.

The officer leaned closer.

“Now you understand me?”

The homeowner straightened.

He was much larger than the officer.

Could have thrown him.

Everyone there knew it.

The officer probably knew it too.

Maybe that was part of why he wanted a reaction.

The homeowner gave him none.

He quietly said:

“I understood you the first time.”

The officer looked irritated by the calm.

He turned toward the red cooler beside the table.

Without warning, he kicked it.

The cooler flipped sideways.

Its white lid burst open.

Ice scattered across the grass.
