On difficult days, Otis was still there.

He reached the doorway.

Turned.

And began backing through.

Daisy's posture changed almost as soon as he started.

She leaned toward him.

Her front paws moved.

Then she followed his chest through the opening.

Once across, she often continued walking as though nothing unusual had happened.

That contrast made the behavior even more striking.

A dog who had been completely frozen seconds earlier was moving again.

Then Staff Began Looking for Smaller Changes

The first sign of progress was not Daisy confidently walking through a doorway alone.

It was hesitation becoming shorter.

Sometimes she approached closer before freezing.

Sometimes she placed one front paw near the threshold instead of stopping farther away.

Sometimes Otis had already backed halfway through before she needed to follow rather than requiring him to remain almost directly against her.

Those were small differences.

They mattered.

Fear-related rehabilitation often advances in increments too subtle to make a dramatic before-and-after story.

Daisy did not need one miraculous breakthrough.

She needed enough safe repetitions for doorways to stop predicting whatever made her body lock in place.

Otis Needed Boundaries Too

There was another dog in this story, and his needs could not be ignored simply because his behavior helped Daisy.

Otis was ten.

Repeatedly backing through doors was not something staff could demand from a senior Bloodhound indefinitely.

If he showed stiffness, discomfort, uncertainty, or difficulty maintaining balance, the routine needed to change.

Helping Daisy could never come at the expense of Otis's physical well-being.

So staff continued developing alternatives while preserving the familiar routine when it remained safe.

The long-term goal was simple.

Otis could be reassuring.

He should not have to be necessary.
