There may also be limitations that take longer to resolve than anyone hopes.

For now, the rescue is taking the process one stage at a time.

Healing first.

Safe movement when appropriate.

Strength later.

No shortcuts.

The Shaved Fur Is Starting to Tell a Different Story

Diesel's hip still looks different from the rest of him.

The shaved area remains visible.

Healing abrasions mark where his body was injured.

The splint makes it impossible to forget that one leg still needs protection.

But those signs no longer represent only the day he arrived.

They are also part of an ongoing recovery.

Staff can watch wounds improve.

They can monitor his comfort.

They can see his energy returning in small increments.

And perhaps most clearly, they can see how badly Diesel wants to participate in the world outside his medical bed.

Their job is to make sure that desire does not outrun his healing body.

Diesel Still Watches for People Who Stop

Someone passes the kennel.

His eyes follow.

Usually, he stays down.

Then another person pauses.

They lower themselves in front of the gate.

Diesel's ears rise.

His front paws move.

Sometimes he still starts pulling before anyone can reach him.

His shoulders carry his body forward while the injured hind leg trails behind.

But staff know the pattern now.

They don't sit at the front and encourage him to finish.

They close the distance.

Because Diesel has already shown them what happens if they wait.

He will keep pulling until he reaches the bars.

Then he will lie there with his muzzle pressed into the opening, his splinted leg stretched behind him, and his tail quietly moving against the floor.

All that effort just to be a little closer.

So while Diesel's body is still healing, the people who stop for him have learned something simple:

they can be the ones who move.
