During severe drought at forty-three, her own farm’s allocation was cut.
She lost part cotton.
A neighbor asked:
“You could probably get exception.”
“Why?”
“You run committee.”
She stared.
He laughed nervously.
“I’m joking.”
She said:
“Good.”
That night she wrote committee policy requiring chair’s farm requests reviewed independently.
Because temptation is easier to control before it arrives.
She thought of neighboring farmer.
He had likely begun with one emergency.
One exception.
One justification.
Systems should not depend on saintliness.
Her father wrote similar:
Good fence better than good intentions.
At forty-seven, the neighboring farmer suffered stroke.
His son took over operations.
The son visited her.
They had known each other as children but were never close.
He sat on porch.
“My father wants see you.”
She almost refused.
“Why?”
“He didn’t say.”
She drove to rehabilitation center.
The neighboring farmer looked smaller.
Left arm weak.
Speech slower.
He saw her.
Smiled crooked.
“Fish.”
She laughed once.
“Still?”
“Best thing you ever did.”
“That’s generous.”
He looked toward window.
Then:
“I lied.”
She waited.
“About your father.”
“What?”
“He didn’t just terminate easement.”
“He found second branch.”
Her heart changed.
“When?”
“Year before termination.”
“He confronted me.”
“Why didn’t he report?”
The man struggled.
“Because I promised remove.”
“Didn’t.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Drought.”
“Then money.”
“Then…”
He searched.
“Easy.”
The word landed.
“It became easy.”
She said nothing.
He continued:
“Your father knew later.”
“He suspected.”
“I avoided.”
“Why tell now?”
The neighboring farmer looked at his weak hand.
“Because dying?”
“You’re not dying.”
“Feels close enough.”
He smiled bitterly.
“I kept telling myself your father was proud.”
“Difficult.”
“Wouldn’t cooperate.”
“Truth?”
“He scared me.”
She stared.
“Why?”
“He was willing to lose crop rather than owe me.”
“I didn’t understand that.”
“I thought everybody had price once enough pressure.”
The young woman thought of her father’s nearly empty farm.
Maybe that stubbornness hurt him financially.
Maybe saved property morally.
Both.
The neighboring farmer continued:
“I offered him partnership.”
“Quiet water sharing.”
