May felt a small chill.
Then she turned toward her father.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you think Vernon knew what the tractor was?”
Her father considered the question.
“I don't know.”
“He acted like he wanted me to leave it alone.”
Her father nodded.
“I noticed.”
She looked down at the notebook.
“What if he tries to take it back?”
Her father placed one hand on her shoulder.
“We've got the sale paperwork. If there's a genuine legal question, we'll handle it properly.”
May nodded.
But her worry remained.
And she had reason to worry.
That evening, the auctioneer sat alone in his office, staring at his computer.
On the screen was an email from the machinery broker.
It had arrived several weeks earlier.
The broker had expressed serious interest in the tractor and mentioned a possible purchase well above scrap value if authentication supported its identity.
The auctioneer had never shared the message with the estate executor.
Now the machine was gone.
And the girl who bought it possessed a notebook that might establish its historical significance.
He opened a new document.
At the top, he typed:
Notice of Sale Irregularity — Lot 47.
Then he began constructing an explanation for why the transaction should be reversed.
He believed that if he moved quickly enough, he might regain possession before the family understood what they had found.
But the girl had already done something he had not anticipated.
She had saved the receipt.
She had preserved the notebook.
And nearly thirty farmers had witnessed the auctioneer strike the gavel.
This time, his usual threats might not be enough.
When the tractor arrived at the Cutler farm, May insisted that it be placed beneath the roof of the old equipment shed.
Her father agreed.
The machine was too important to leave exposed to rain while they investigated its history, and its condition was too uncertain for anyone to attempt starting it. The experienced neighbor who transported it helped position the tractor on stable ground, and the adults secured the wheels before removing the towing equipment.
May stood beside the shed entrance, practically bouncing with excitement.
She had spent the entire drive imagining what her grandfather would have said.
