For several seconds she heard nothing except the fluorescent ballast humming overhead.
Daniel took the card again.
Read slowly.
“C.R.”
Ellie whispered:
“Calvin Rusk.”
Daniel looked at her.
Neither said anything.
“Could be somebody else.”
“You know another machinery dealer named C.R. who was bidding on this tractor?”
“No.”
Ellie’s anger arrived suddenly.
“They laughed at me because somebody made this thing look broken.”
Daniel’s expression remained controlled.
“Maybe.”
“What do you mean maybe?”
“We have a card.”
“A backwards linkage.”
“Fresh seal.”
“And Calvin bid after I bid.”
“Yes.”
“So?”
“So we don’t jump from suspicious to proven because we want the story to make sense.”
Ellie hated how calm he remained.
“Dad.”
“If somebody deliberately disabled this tractor to buy it cheaply, that’s fraud.”
“I know.”
“Which means we stop talking like mechanics and start preserving evidence.”
Daniel photographed the card.
Then the place they found it.
Then the linkage.
Then every recent-looking fastener around the assembly.
He put the original card inside a clear sandwich bag.
Ellie watched.
“What do we do?”
Daniel looked at the tractor.
“Tomorrow morning we call Vernon Pike.”
Ellie stared.
“He’ll warn Calvin.”
“Maybe.”
“Then why call him?”
“Because before we accuse anyone, we ask questions.”
“And if he lies?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then we learn something.”
The next morning, Vernon answered on the fourth ring.
Daniel put the phone on speaker.
“Pike Auction.”
“Vernon. Daniel Mercer.”
A pause.
“Morning.”
“Ellie bought Lot 189 yesterday.”
“Yeah.”
Vernon laughed.
“That poor tractor survive the trip?”
“It runs.”
Silence.
Only half a second.
But Ellie noticed.
Vernon recovered quickly.
“Well, good for her.”
Daniel looked at Ellie.
“Started after correcting the fuel-control linkage.”
Another pause.
“Glad it was simple.”
“Do you know who consigned it?”
“Why?”
“Curious.”
“Estate liquidation.”
“Which estate?”
Papers shuffled.
“Uh… Hawthorne Agricultural Holdings.”
Daniel frowned.
Ellie had never heard the name.
“Local?”
“Some corporate outfit.”
“Who delivered the tractor?”
“Transporter.”
“Which?”
Another pause.
“Daniel, what’s this about?”
He looked at Ellie.
“Found a service card inside the fuel linkage.”
The silence became much longer.
Vernon’s voice changed.
“What card?”
“Prairie State Equipment.”
“I don’t know anything about that.”
“Card says engine good.”
No answer.
“Also says disable fuel control before sale.”
Vernon inhaled audibly.
