She turned the laptop.
Video began.
11:18.
A pickup rolled past the machine shed with headlights off.
The farmer recognized it.
His nephew’s.
The truck stopped beyond the barn.
A man approached.
Nephew.
The farmer felt something inside him collapse quietly.
His daughter touched his shoulder.
“Keep watching.”
The nephew unlocked the side door with a key.
He disappeared inside.
11:26.
Another vehicle arrived.
Not a truck.
A dark SUV.
The senior mechanic stepped out.
The old farmer leaned closer.
The two men met beside the shed.
No audio on the outside camera.
Inside camera caught them entering.
The senior mechanic carried a small tool bag.
The nephew pointed toward the tractor.
The senior mechanic crouched by the clutch housing.
He removed the inspection plate.
The farmer’s daughter whispered:
“Oh my God.”
The senior mechanic reached into his bag.
Pulled out another steel wedge.
Nearly identical.
He pushed it into the flywheel teeth.
The farmer stopped the video.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
His daughter said:
“Now?”
The farmer stared at the frozen image.
His nephew stood beside the tractor while another man deliberately disabled it.
“Now.”
But she pressed play again.
“Wait.”
Audio existed inside the shed.
Faint.
But enough.
The nephew said:
“Once he signs, pull this out.”
The mechanic answered:
“And if he doesn’t?”
“He will.”
“He didn’t before.”
“He thinks the engine is dead now.”
“He was suspicious yesterday.”
The nephew cursed.
“You told me five mechanics would make it convincing.”
The senior mechanic said:
“It would have if that old bastard didn’t hear everything.”
The farmer almost laughed.
His daughter did not.
The conversation continued.
The nephew:
“The contract deadline is Friday.”
Senior mechanic:
“I know.”
“If he misses it, bank review gets ugly.”
“Then developer closes.”
“And my equipment loan disappears.”
The farmer stared.
There it was.
Motive.
Not family concern.
Debt.
The nephew continued:
“You get the twenty-five we agreed.”
The senior mechanic said:
“Thirty.”
“We said twenty-five.”
“We also said nobody would find the first wedge.”
Silence.
The daughter paused the video.
“Thirty thousand.”
The farmer looked toward the window.
Sunlight was touching the fields.
The day looked ordinary.
That offended him.
The daughter asked:
“Do we call the sheriff?”
“Yes.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“What about confronting them?”
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“You don’t want to?”
The farmer’s jaw tightened.
“More than I’ve wanted anything in years.”
“Then why not?”
“Because wanting it is exactly why I shouldn't.”

The county investigator watched the footage three times.
Then asked to see the tractor.
He arrived without lights or marked vehicles.
The farmer appreciated that.
The investigator was in his fifties.
Calm.
Careful.
He photographed the second wedge in place before anyone touched it.
Then the cover.
Tools.
Door.
Tracks.
