His weight moved.
At seven years old, orthopedic discomfort elsewhere in his body was also worth evaluating.
If balancing on a soft mattress felt less secure, Hank might choose the firm floor even if the floor created more pressure once he was lying down.
That possibility could be addressed by trying appropriate supportive surfaces with different levels of firmness.
He Never Looked Afraid of the Bed
Hank did not panic when he saw it.
He did not bark at it.
He did not refuse to approach.
He could sniff it.
He could step onto it.
That was useful information.
The issue seemed subtler.
Hank tolerated the bed.
He simply did not yet choose it for sleep.
Rest Should Not Become a Battle
Repeatedly placing Hank onto the mattress would not teach him that it was comfortable.
It could do the opposite.
A dog needs to be able to settle.
If every attempt to choose the floor resulted in someone moving him, resting itself could become stressful.
Unless there was an immediate medical reason requiring a particular setup, giving Hank controlled choices could reveal what he actually needed.
One Night, Hank Stayed on the Bed Longer
The kennel was quiet.
Hank stepped onto the orthopedic mattress.
He turned.
Then, instead of immediately walking away, he bent his front legs.
His chest lowered.
His hindquarters followed.
For the first time, Hank was completely lying on the bed.
His enormous body filled much of it.
Staff left him alone.
Several minutes passed.
It looked as though the problem might be solved.
Then Hank raised his head.
He stood.
Walked off the mattress.
And returned to the concrete corner.
Within minutes, he was asleep.
That Moment Proved He Could Lie Down on It
Physically, Hank was capable of using the bed.
He had successfully lowered himself and rested there.
But he still preferred something else.
That distinction mattered.
The shelter was no longer trying to teach Hank what a bed was.
It was trying to understand why the bed did not yet feel like the place where he wanted to stay.
The Concrete May Have Offered Predictability
It did not move.
It did not sink.
It was cool and firm.
