It was not removed as a failure.

Hank could continue investigating it.

As his body recovered, his coat changed, and the shelter became more familiar, his preferences might change too.

One day, the thicker mattress might become comfortable.

Or Hank might always prefer something firmer.

The goal was not to make him use one particular product.

The goal was comfortable, safe rest.

His Elbows Would Show Whether the Plan Was Working

Hank's pressure points needed monitoring.

Were they becoming more irritated?

Were they staying dry and intact?

Was the surrounding skin improving?

Could he shift positions comfortably?

Was he spending less time directly on concrete?

Those questions were more meaningful than whether Hank looked cute sleeping in a bed.

Recovery had to be measured by his body.

His Mobility Deserved Attention Too

A seven-year-old giant dog with a history of prolonged outdoor living and thick elbow calluses could have other musculoskeletal concerns.

Staff needed to observe how Hank stood, walked, turned, and lowered himself.

Did he appear stiff after sleeping?

Did he hesitate to rise?

Did one limb carry less weight?

Did he struggle on slippery surfaces?

If anything suggested pain, veterinary evaluation was appropriate.

His bed preference might be behavioral, physical, environmental, or a combination.

Then Hank Did Something New

One afternoon, he walked onto the orthopedic bed.

He stood there.

Instead of immediately turning toward the concrete, Hank lowered his front half.

Then his hips.

He settled.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Hank remained on the mattress.

His eyes closed.

For the first time, he appeared to enter real sleep there.

No one approached.

No one celebrated beside him.

The best response was to let him sleep.

He Still Returned to the Concrete That Night

When evening came, Hank woke.

Stretched.

Stepped off the bed.

Then walked directly to his old corner.

He curled against the wall.

The concrete received him again.

That did not erase the afternoon.

Hank had discovered that the mattress could be a resting place.
