Attorneys submitted a final request that was denied.

He looked at Ruth.

“Mrs. Thompson.”

She turned.

“If it doesn't work…”

“Stop.”

“I need you to hear me.”

“No.”

“Please.”

Ruth’s face twisted.

Elijah smiled.

“You told me I was worth something.”

“You were right.”

“That doesn't mean I did everything right.”

“I hurt people when I was younger.”

“I scared people.”

“I fought.”

“I wasted chances.”

“But Samuel wasn't one of them.”

Ruth cried openly now.

Elijah continued.

“If this ends tonight…”

“You don't let them tell you your kindness was wasted.”

Ruth shook her head.

“Don't talk like that.”

“It wasn't wasted.”

The security door opened.

The officer returned holding a small black charging kit.

The technician grabbed it.

11:55.

Five minutes.

Adapter.

Wrong.

Second adapter.

Loose.

Third.

The phone screen flashed.

Ruth gasped.

A battery symbol appeared.

The technician connected it to a secure laptop.

“Let it boot.”

The warden said:

“We have no authority to delay beyond midnight without a stay.”

Maya’s voice came through the wall phone.

“I’m on with a state supreme court clerk.”

The warden replied:

“No order has been issued.”

“Then don't start until they issue one.”

“I cannot disregard a death warrant.”

Elijah watched adults argue over whether his life could legally exist for another five minutes.

The phone booted.

Old logo.

Then a home screen.

Ruth nearly collapsed.

The technician asked for passcode.

She did not know it.

Four digits.

Elijah suddenly said:

“Try 0-5-2-8.”

Everyone looked at him.

Ruth frowned.

“Why?”

“Your birthday.”

Ruth stared.

May twenty-eighth.

The technician entered it.

Unlocked.

Ruth covered her mouth.

Samuel had used her birthday.

The technician opened voicemail.

Nothing.

No saved messages.

Ruth’s hope collapsed.

Then he checked account settings.

Cloud synchronization.

An old service provider login remained cached.

The account had not been active in years, but archived data existed.

“Network access is restricted.”

Briggs looked toward the warden.

“Use the secure investigative terminal.”

The warden hesitated.

11:57.

Three minutes.

“Do it.”

The technician connected.

Authentication.

Old account.

Recovery prompt.

Ruth answered Samuel’s first school.

His childhood dog.

Then a folder appeared.

VOICE BACKUP — UNSYNCED.

Thirty-two files.

The technician sorted by date.

Samuel died March 17, 2014.
