Listened to her describe school.

And pretended to be fascinated by the elaborate stories she invented about Biscuit.

Amelia liked the attention.

She had begun asking whether Daniel would ever marry again.

When Vanessa came into their lives, the possibility seemed exciting.

Someone else might read bedtime stories.

Someone else might help choose birthday decorations.

Someone else might sit beside Daddy at dinner so he wouldn't look lonely when Amelia went upstairs.

One evening, while Daniel washed dishes, Amelia approached Vanessa.

"Can I ask you something?"

Vanessa looked up.

"Of course."

"Do you like my daddy?"

She smiled.

"Very much."

Amelia considered that.

"Do you like me?"

For a moment, Vanessa seemed surprised.

Then she crouched.

"Of course I do, sweetheart."

Amelia smiled.

Then did something that made Daniel's heart ache when he heard about it later.

She placed one small hand against Vanessa's arm.

"Mommy's in heaven, but you can be my friend."

Vanessa embraced her.

Daniel saw the moment from the kitchen doorway.

He thought he had found someone capable of loving both of them.

He had no reason to believe the embrace meant different things to the woman giving it and the child receiving it.

The first warning came from Denise Wilson.

Naomi's mother had been part of Amelia's life from the beginning. She lived thirty minutes away, visited every week, and was the person Daniel called whenever his schedule became impossible.

Denise was sixty-one, a retired nurse with short silver-threaded curls, deep brown skin, and a calm manner that disappeared quickly when someone threatened a child.

She liked Daniel.

She admired how devoted he remained to Amelia after Naomi died.

But she understood grief could make people vulnerable to attention that felt like rescue.

When Daniel introduced Vanessa, Denise was polite.

She asked about her work.

Her family.

Her interests.

Vanessa answered smoothly.

Then she began describing the changes she thought would benefit Amelia.

"A little more structure," she said. "Children need predictable expectations."

Denise nodded.

"Of course."

"And consequences when they misbehave."

Daniel smiled.

"Amelia's usually pretty good."

Vanessa laughed.

"All children test boundaries."

Denise studied her.

"What kind of consequences?"

Vanessa seemed surprised.

"Nothing unreasonable. Less screen time. Earlier bedtime. That sort of thing."

Denise nodded.

Those were ordinary possibilities.

But something about the way Vanessa spoke unsettled her.

She seemed less interested in helping Amelia learn than in establishing who would control the household.

After dinner, Denise found Daniel alone near the back porch.

"She's pleasant."

Daniel smiled.

"I think so."

Denise looked toward the house.

"Does Amelia like her?"
