Then Naomi became ill.

At first, the symptoms were difficult to understand.

Fatigue.

Persistent discomfort.

Unexplained changes in her health.

Naomi continued working until tests revealed a serious illness that required prolonged treatment.

Daniel remembered the day they received the diagnosis.

They sat together in a hospital consultation room.

Naomi held his hand.

He listened to the physician explain treatment options.

He asked questions.

Took notes.

Tried to understand everything.

But when they returned home, he walked into the kitchen and stood staring at the refrigerator for nearly ten minutes.

Naomi approached.

"Daniel."

He turned.

She saw his face.

Then stepped into his arms.

He held her.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Finally, he whispered, "I'm scared."

Naomi began crying.

"So am I."

They faced the illness together.

Treatment schedules replaced ordinary routines.

Family members helped with childcare.

Daniel reduced some work travel.

Naomi's mother, Denise, stayed for extended periods.

Friends brought meals.

Neighbors helped with errands.

And little Amelia learned that Mommy sometimes needed quiet afternoons in bed.

Naomi remained determined to protect her daughter from unnecessary fear.

She continued reading bedtime stories when she had the strength.

She made small recordings of herself singing Amelia's favorite songs.

She wrote letters for future birthdays.

And she asked Daniel to promise something important.

One evening, after Amelia had fallen asleep, Naomi sat beside him on the living room couch.

Her face was pale.

Her voice tired.

But her eyes were steady.

"Daniel."

He looked toward her.

"Yes?"

"If things don't go the way we wantโ€”"

He shook his head immediately.

"Don't."

She reached for his hand.

"Please."

He looked down.

Naomi waited.

Finally, he nodded.

She continued.

"Don't let grief turn this house into a museum."

His eyes filled.

"Naomi."

"I mean it."

She smiled sadly.

"Let Amelia laugh. Let her make messes. Let her have friends over. Let her become whoever she wants to become."

Daniel began crying.

Naomi squeezed his fingers.

"And one day, if you meet somebody kind, don't feel guilty about loving again."
