Not because she had stopped visiting.
She had returned three times.
Each visit longer.
Each departure harder.
The rancher eventually understood that waiting for certainty was becoming another way of avoiding risk.
So he saddled his horse.
Packed supplies.
Left the ranch under the foreman’s care.
Rode south.
When he reached her community, people watched him with the same measuring eyes she had worn three years earlier.
He found her near a fire sorting dried herbs.
She looked up.
Saw him.
Went still.
“You rode four days.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The rancher dismounted.
“My horse is asking the same thing.”
She smiled.
Then saw his face.
The smile faded.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why are you here?”
He swallowed.
He had practiced the speech.
Lost it somewhere two days earlier.
So he told the truth.
“I do not want to ask you to leave your people.”
She watched.
“I do not want you to become someone smaller to fit my ranch.”
Silence.
“I do not want to pretend loving me means you owe me permanence.”
She stood.
The rancher continued.
“But I want a life where when you leave, you have somewhere with me to return to.”
Her eyes filled.
“And when I leave my ranch, I have somewhere with you to come.”
He breathed.
“I do not know what that looks like.”
“Good,” she whispered.
He smiled nervously.
“I knew you would say that.”
She stepped closer.
He reached inside his coat.
Pulled out a small silver ring.
Not ornate.
Not expensive.
His hands shook slightly.
She noticed.
“Rancher.”
“Yes?”
“Finish.”
“I am trying.”
“You rode four days.”
“You can finish one sentence.”
He laughed.
Then looked into her eyes.
“Will you marry me?”
She answered before he fully finished the final word.
“Yes.”
He blinked.
“That fast?”
“I had four months.”
People behind her began laughing.
Apparently they had been listening.
The rancher looked around.
“You could have warned me.”
She smiled.
“No.”
Her people marked the commitment that evening with a fire and words spoken by elders.
The rancher understood only some.
The Apache woman translated what needed translating.
