Vanessa whispered:

“You said you trusted me.”

“I do.”

“Then prove it.”

Graham stared.

“That is not what trust means.”

The words landed heavily.

Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward the drive.

Graham saw.

Then he stepped between Vanessa and the platform.

“Nobody touches the girl.”

Claire looked toward Lily.

Her daughter was shaking harder now.

Claire climbed the small step.

Kneeling was impossible in the fitted red dress, so she bent close.

“Baby.”

Lily looked at her.

“You’re not in trouble.”

Tears appeared instantly.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

“Even if Grandma gets mad?”

Claire glanced toward Evelyn.

“For the first time in my life, I genuinely do not care.”

A tiny nervous laugh escaped Lily.

Claire touched her cheek.

“Are you sure you want to show this?”

Lily looked toward Graham.

Then Vanessa.

Then her mother.

“Yes.”

“All right.”

Claire stepped beside her.

Not in front.

Beside.

The DJ inserted the drive.

A folder appeared on the large projection screen.

One video file.

The date was that afternoon.

4:13 p.m.

Three hours before the ceremony.

Claire felt Vanessa sway.

Graham noticed.

He clicked the file himself.

The screen went black.

Then an image appeared.

A bedroom.

Not just any bedroom.

The bridal suite upstairs at Rosewood Estate.

The angle was low.

Slightly crooked.

As though the recording device had been left behind a stack of decorative boxes on a side table.

Vanessa stood near the window.

Still in a silk bridal robe.

Evelyn stood beside her holding a champagne flute.

Claire’s stomach tightened.

The audio crackled.

Then Vanessa’s voice filled the ballroom.

“…I told you Claire would never notice.”

The real Vanessa stopped breathing.

On the screen, Evelyn answered:

“She notices things. She just doesn’t confront people.”

A few guests turned toward Claire.

Claire could not move.

Vanessa on the recording laughed.

“Same difference.”

Then she opened a folder on the dressing table.

Papers.

Numbers.

Graham stepped closer to the screen.

His attorney brain engaged immediately.

Recorded Vanessa said:

“After tonight, Graham’s firm can refinance the Bellevue property.”

The real Graham whispered:

“What?”

On-screen Evelyn said:

“He thinks the building is yours?”

Vanessa smiled.

“He thinks Dad left it to me.”

Claire’s knees almost failed.

Bellevue property.

A four-story brick rental building in Providence.

Their father had owned it.

Claire had been told it was sold to cover estate taxes after his death.

Vanessa continued on-screen:

“He doesn’t need every detail before the wedding.”

Graham slowly turned toward his bride.

She shook her head desperately.

“Graham, it’s not—”

“Quiet.”

The video continued.

Evelyn asked:

“And the education account?”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“I moved enough back to keep it from triggering anything.”

“How much is still missing?”

“Eighty-six.”

A guest whispered:

“Thousand?”

On-screen Evelyn answered it.

“Eighty-six thousand dollars is not ‘enough.’”

Claire grabbed the edge of the DJ booth.

Lily’s hand found hers.

Education account.

Her brain rejected the phrase.

There was no education account.

Not that Claire knew about.

Vanessa said on-screen:

“Once Graham refinances Bellevue, I replace the money.”
