He knew how to lower his eyes when wealthy men passed him in the stable yard. He knew how to answer questions without revealing more than necessary, and how to tolerate insults from people who believed a man wearing patched trousers couldn't possibly understand anything beyond horses and fences.

He also knew that Judge Edward Hawthorne rarely noticed the servants who worked around him.

That was the reason Daniel had taken the job.

Six months earlier, he'd arrived in Silver Creek with a battered saddle, two changes of clothing, and a letter recommending him as an experienced ranch hand. The letter was genuine, written by a foreman he'd worked for during three difficult winters farther north, and the skills described in it were real.

Daniel could break a difficult horse without mistreating it, repair most ordinary ranch equipment, build a fence capable of surviving Montana winters, and read the land well enough to recognize when a creek was about to flood.

But those abilities weren't the whole story.

He could also read legal descriptions, understand survey bearings, compare property records, and recognize inconsistencies in documents that most ranch hands never had occasion to examine.

His mother had taught him.

Her name was Eleanor Carter, and she had once owned a ranch called Morrow Bend, a beautiful stretch of grazing land bordering the northern tributaries of Silver Creek.

The property had included nearly six thousand acres, valuable water access, and an old stone farmhouse overlooking a wide valley.

Daniel remembered the place from childhood.

The apple trees near the house.

The cold water running through the irrigation ditch.

His mother's gray horse.

And the way the mountains looked purple when the evening sun disappeared behind them.

He also remembered the day everything changed.

He was nine.

His father had died the previous winter, leaving Eleanor responsible for the ranch and a young son.

She was capable.

Practical.

And determined to preserve the property for Daniel's future.
