Her Father Forced Her to Marry a Penniless Servant — Then She Discovered the Secret Beneath His Wedding Vows

And she knew how to smile through dinners while wondering what punishment might follow if she spoke honestly.

Elizabeth looked toward Daniel.

“You think I was frightened?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked away.

For several seconds, she remained silent.

Then she whispered, “I still am.”

Daniel kept his eyes on the road.

“I know.”

He didn't tell her there was nothing to fear.

He didn't promise a perfect future.

He simply drove the wagon carefully toward the mountains.

And somehow, that honesty made her feel safer than Victor's expensive declarations ever had.

By late afternoon, the cabin came into view.

It stood beside a small meadow near a narrow creek, surrounded by pine trees and rough wooden fencing. Smoke rose from a stone chimney, and a modest barn stood beyond a fenced paddock where two horses grazed.

Elizabeth stared.

The cabin was smaller than the drawing room at Hawthorne Hall.

Its walls were built from thick logs, the porch supported by heavy wooden posts, and the roof covered with weathered shingles.

Wildflowers grew beside the steps.

A narrow path led toward the creek.

And behind the cabin, the mountains rose beneath a brilliant blue sky.

It was beautiful.

In a rough, lonely way.

Daniel stopped the wagon.

Then climbed down.

He approached her side and offered his hand.

Elizabeth hesitated.

Then accepted.

He lifted her carefully to the ground.

For one brief moment, she felt the strength in his arms.

The steadiness.

The ease with which he supported her.

Then he released her immediately.

She looked toward the cabin.

“This is yours?”

He nodded.

“I built most of it.”

Elizabeth stared.

“By yourself?”

“With help when I needed it.”

She studied the roof.

The porch.

The neatly stacked firewood.

Then looked at him.

“You built all this while working for my father?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I started before I took that job.”
