She wiped her face.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

She stepped forward.

“You have always had a family I was never fully inside.”

He stared.

“My mother.”

“Your daughter.”

“Your history.”

“Every time something mattered, there was a version of you I couldn’t reach.”

The father’s anger did not disappear.

But something else entered.

Recognition.

Not agreement.

Recognition.

She continued.

“When your mother got sick, you were at the hospital every day.”

“Yes.”

“I managed this house.”

“Our bills.”

“My son.”

“Your daughter.”

“I cooked.”

“I drove everyone.”

“I took care of everything.”

“And then your mother leaves the biggest thing she owns to your daughter.”

The father spoke quietly.

“So?”

His wife stared as though he had slapped her.

“So?”

“Yes.”

“It was her property.”

“She could leave it to whoever she wanted.”

“We put money into this house.”

“I did.”

“We did.”

“Then that becomes a legal claim if one exists.”

The father pointed toward the phone.

“It does not become permission to steal documents from a child.”

His wife’s face twisted.

“I was trying to protect what we built.”

“You slapped my daughter.”

“I lost my temper.”

“You threatened to throw her out of a house she apparently owns.”

That sentence stopped both of them.

The wife’s face went pale.

The father looked around again.

The irony was so severe it felt unreal.

She had told the legal owner to leave.

Maybe.

If the documents were valid.

He did not yet know.

He refused to assume.

That mattered.

He held up the phone.

“I am not deciding property law in this hallway.”

His wife’s breathing became uneven.

“But I am deciding something else.”

“What?”

“You do not touch my daughter again.”

She began crying.

“You do not enter her room.”

“You do not take anything from her.”

“You do not ask her for money.”

“And tonight, you do not stay here with her.”
