The boy had thought she meant family jewelry.

Now he understood.

He felt guilty for not telling.

His father said:

“You were sixteen.”

“I knew it was weird.”

“Knowing weird and knowing dangerous are different.”

The boy asked:

“Is she going to jail?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you hate her?”

The biological father looked toward him.

“She’s your mother.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He answered:

“I’m angry.”

The boy nodded.

Sometimes adults did not need to turn every emotion into moral certainty.

The Black father and stepmother met again through lawyers several weeks later.

No children.

She looked exhausted.

He did too.

She had stopped pretending the phone demand was about fairness.

The attorney asked whether she wished to make a statement regarding the marriage before negotiations.

She did.

She looked at her husband.

“I knew about the deed for six months.”

The father nodded.

He already knew.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That once your daughter turned eighteen, she could force us out.”

The trust lawyer had explained that was not actually how management worked during the trust term.

The father said:

“You could have asked.”

“I thought you’d side with her.”

“I would have consulted a lawyer.”

She almost smiled bitterly.

“Exactly.”

He stared.

“That is what normal adults do.”

She looked down.

“I felt cheated.”

“By my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We spent money on that house.”

“That is a claim.”

“Yes.”

“You treated it like theft.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

The father continued:

“You could have brought receipts.”

“Renovation records.”

“Mortgage contributions.”

“You brought a plan to steal an envelope from a child.”

The wife began crying.

“I know.”

The father did not comfort her.

She continued:

“I kept thinking if I could get the original documents before you knew, I could make the situation negotiable.”

“By destroying evidence?”

“I didn’t know if I would.”

“You discussed it.”

“Yes.”

“Would you have?”

She took a long time.

“I don’t know.”
