But the father saw it.
He pressed play.
Her own recorded voice filled the bridal suite.
After the wedding, you’re leaving that house.
The bride’s face changed completely.
The recording continued.
If you make this difficult, it gets worse.
The father stopped it.
Silence.
The bride stared at the phone.
Then at him.
“You recorded me?”
“No.”
Her eyes widened.
The father said:
“She did.”
The bride’s expression moved through panic, embarrassment, calculation.
Then anger.
“She had no right.”
The father almost laughed.
“No right?”
“She secretly recorded a private conversation.”
“With an eight-year-old you were threatening.”
“I wasn't threatening her.”
He replayed the final sentence.
If you make this difficult, it gets worse.
The bride’s voice echoed.
He stopped it again.
She looked toward the door.
“We can talk after the wedding.”
“There is no wedding.”
She stared.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“You're emotional.”
“Yes.”
“You need to calm down.”
The father looked at her.
“Do not tell me to calm down.”
The bride’s own anger appeared.
“Do you understand what you are doing?”
“Yes.”
“Two hundred people are downstairs.”
“I don't care.”
“My parents flew across the country.”
“I don't care.”
“We spent nearly a hundred thousand dollars on today.”
“I don't care.”
Her face hardened.
“You're going to destroy our life because a child is jealous?”
The father took one slow step forward.
“Say that again.”
She realized too late.
But pride did not let her stop.
“She is jealous.”
“She has been from the beginning.”
The father stared at the woman he had planned to marry.
Something about finally seeing the cruelty openly made him calmer.
“How long?”
The bride frowned.
“How long what?”
“How long have you been treating her differently when I’m not there?”
“She’s difficult.”
“How long?”
The bride folded her arms.
“Maybe if you stopped treating her like a wounded baby every second, she wouldn't manipulate you so easily.”
The father’s eyes narrowed.
“She lost her mother.”
“Years ago.”
The words hung in the room.
The father looked at her as though he had never seen her before.
The bride realized the mistake.
“I didn’t mean—”
“Yes, you did.”
“No.”
“You meant every word.”
She moved toward him.
He stepped back again.
“Don't touch me.”
Her face reddened.
“You promised to marry me.”
“That promise ended when you threatened my daughter.”
The bride laughed harshly.
“You think anyone else is going to want this?”
He stared.
“This?”
“A man with a child who controls everything.”
The father went silent.
The bride continued because rage had stripped away whatever mask she had maintained.
“She interrupts dinners.”
“She calls you whenever we travel.”
“She sleeps outside our room when she has nightmares.”
