The father looked at her.

“Thank you.”

She stared.

“For what?”

“For demonstrating the problem without my daughter needing to.”

At that exact moment, the ballroom doors opened again.

Two uniformed police officers entered with the venue’s security director.

Beside them walked the family attorney.

The bride turned.

Her face went pale.

The father lowered the microphone.

The family attorney approached.

“I received the recording.”

The bride looked at the father.

“You sent it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before I came downstairs.”

The attorney continued.

“The child also has a visible injury consistent with what she described.”

The bride shook her head.

“I never hit her.”

The father’s eyes narrowed.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“Nobody said you hit her.”

The bride stopped.

Everyone around them heard.

Her mother whispered:

“Oh, God.”

The attorney looked toward the officers.

One officer stepped forward.

“We’d like to speak with you privately.”

The bride laughed nervously.

“This is ridiculous.”

She turned to the guests.

“You all know me.”

Nobody responded.

The bride looked at her bridesmaids.

One lowered her eyes.

Another stepped backward.

The bride’s voice rose.

“She is a child!”

The father said:

“Exactly.”

He looked toward the officers.

“Please take this conversation somewhere my daughter cannot hear it.”

The bride’s face changed.

“Where is she?”

The father’s entire body tensed.

“You will not see her.”

“I’m still—”

“No.”

He took one step forward.

“You are nothing to her now.”

The bride recoiled.

The officers guided her toward a side room.

She did not resist physically.

But as she left, she looked over her shoulder at the father.

“You're making the worst mistake of your life.”

He answered calmly.

“No.”

“I almost did that ten minutes ago.”

The ballroom doors closed behind her.

The guests left slowly.

Nobody knew how to behave after attending a wedding that became evidence.

Some hugged the father.

Others simply squeezed his shoulder.

A few of the bride’s relatives left without speaking.

The father did not care.

He wanted only one person.

He found his daughter upstairs.

She sat on a sofa beside his sister.

Her flower basket lay on the floor.

She was still wearing the white dress.

When he entered, she stood immediately.

“Is it over?”

The father nodded.

“Yes.”

“Are you mad?”

The question almost broke him.

He crossed the room.

“Why would I be mad?”

“Because everybody came.”

He knelt.

“Come here.”

She stepped forward.

He hugged her tightly.

The father said:

“You saved me.”

She pulled back.
