Everyone quieted.

He looked across the room.

For a moment, he struggled.

Not with the decision.

With the humiliation.

He had invited all these people to witness a future that never existed.

Then he remembered his daughter’s face when he said there would be no wedding.

Relief.

That was enough.

“There will not be a wedding today.”

A collective gasp moved through the ballroom.

The bride’s mother stood.

“What?”

The father continued.

“I apologize to everyone who traveled here.”

“But something occurred before the ceremony that requires me to end this immediately.”

The bride entered from the rear.

Still in the wedding gown.

Her face was furious.

“Stop.”

Everyone turned.

She walked down the aisle.

Guests stared.

The bride pointed at him.

“Do not stand there and humiliate me.”

The father lowered the microphone.

“Stay where you are.”

She continued walking.

“I said stop.”

The bride ignored him.

She reached the front.

Then faced the guests.

“He is canceling our wedding because his daughter told a lie.”

The room erupted in whispers.

The father’s mother stood.

His expression changed.

The bride continued.

“His child has never wanted us together.”

“She has been manipulative for months.”

The father raised the microphone.

“That is enough.”

The bride turned.

“No.”

“If you're destroying my reputation, everybody deserves the truth.”

The father looked directly at her.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

He connected his phone to the ballroom audio system.

The bride’s face changed.

“No.”

The father pressed play.

Her recorded voice filled the ballroom.

After the wedding, you’re leaving that house.

The guests went silent.

The bride lunged toward his phone.

His best man stepped between them.

The recording continued.

If you tell him before the wedding, I’ll tell everyone you tried to hit me.

The bride shoved the best man aside.

“Turn it off!”

The father stepped backward.

Her voice blasted through speakers surrounding the ballroom.

I’m about to be his wife. Who do you think they’ll believe?

The bride screamed:

“Turn that off!”

The father stopped playback.

Silence.

The bride’s father slowly sat down.

Her mother covered her mouth.

Several guests looked away.

The bride stared at everyone.

Then at the father.

“You had no right.”

He almost whispered:

“She had every right.”

The bride’s face twisted.

“She set me up.”

“She is eight years old.”

“She recorded me intentionally!”

“Because she was afraid nobody would believe her.”

The father looked around the ballroom.

“Apparently she had a reason.”

The bride slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

Gasps followed.

The father did not move.

His cheek reddened.

His best man stepped toward the bride.

The father raised one hand.

“No.”

The bride stood breathing hard.

Then seemed to realize what she had done.
