“That woman has lost her mind.”
The homeowner shook his head.
“I don’t think she just lost it.”
His neighbor looked toward him.
“What?”
He thought of the leaves.
The repeated pool notices.
The timing.
The redevelopment easements.
“This was planned.”
The widow became still.
The homeowner continued.
“She thought I’d be at work.”
“How would she know?”
“I don’t know.”
Then he remembered.
HOA architectural inspection calendar.
He had received an email two days earlier saying a neighborhood drainage contractor might inspect common areas between ten and four.
He had replied that he would be away most of the day.
His meeting was canceled.
He worked from home.
Then went swimming.
The HOA president knew.
His neighbor stared.
“You told them you’d be gone.”
“Yes.”
“So she came because—”
“Yes.”
The widow lowered herself into a chair.
“My God.”
The homeowner looked toward the backyard.
“I think the pool violation was supposed to happen without me seeing anything.”
His neighbor whispered:
“What was she trying to create?”
He looked toward the water.
“I don’t know yet.”
The answer came the next afternoon.
The recovered syringe contained a hazardous chemical.
Investigators did not initially tell the homeowner the full laboratory result.
Only enough.
It was not routine pool treatment.
It did not belong in residential water.
And while the amount recovered had not entered his pool according to preliminary evidence, the substance was serious enough to transform the case immediately.
The homeowner sat across from the detective.
“Would it have hurt me?”
The detective chose words carefully.
“If introduced into the pool, concentration and exposure would matter.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“We don’t believe you were exposed.”
The homeowner leaned forward.
“I was swimming.”
“I understand.”
“Would she have known I was there?”
The detective paused.
“Based on the video, her reaction suggests she did not expect you.”
The homeowner nodded.
That somehow made it better and worse.
She may not have intended to expose him physically.
She had intended to contaminate his pool when she believed he was gone.
The detective continued.
