The second officer nodded.

They called a supervisor and requested appropriate evidence handling.

The homeowner wrapped a towel around himself.

His hands had begun shaking.

He hated that.

During the confrontation, adrenaline had made him steady.

Now his body understood what had happened.

The officer noticed.

“You okay?”

The homeowner looked toward the pool.

“I was in there.”

The officer followed his gaze.

Understanding arrived.

“You think she put something in already?”

“I don’t know.”

The HOA president immediately said:

“I never touched the water.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Silence.

Her face changed.

Again, she realized too late what she had admitted.

The homeowner said:

“I thought the syringe was a water-treatment sample.”

She glared.

The officer asked:

“Ma’am, don’t say anything else right now.”

The HOA president stiffened.

“Am I being arrested?”

“We’re figuring out what happened.”

The officer looked at her.

The homeowner sat inside his kitchen wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt while officers moved through the backyard.

He could see the HOA president through the window.

She had been given a towel because the temperature was dropping.

She stood near the patio table, arms folded tightly.

For the first time in eight months, she looked small.

The homeowner did not enjoy it.

That surprised him.

He had imagined consequences many times.

A judge dismissing the HOA fines.

A board voting her out.

Maybe an apology.

He had never imagined police collecting evidence from his shrubs because she might have attempted to contaminate water while he was inside it.

His elderly neighbor arrived at the front door.

Police initially tried to keep her out.

She ignored them until the homeowner appeared.

“I’m fine.”

he told her.

She looked at him.

“No, you’re not.”

He almost laughed.

She entered.

He explained.

Her face hardened more with each sentence.

When he mentioned the syringe, she whispered:
