Then looked toward Andre.

“Daddy?”

He smiled.

“I'm here.”

She considered.

Then stepped into the shallow water.

One foot.

Then the other.

She paused.

The instructor remained nearby.

Tanya watched from the deck.

Andre stood beside the pool, his hands loosely folded.

For several seconds, Maya remained on the steps.

Then she slowly lowered herself farther into the water.

Her expression changed.

The fear didn't vanish all at once.

But something else appeared.

Recognition.

The familiar feel of the pool.

The sunlight.

The gentle movement of the water.

Then she smiled.

“Daddy!”

Andre leaned forward.

“Yes?”

She pointed toward the opposite side.

“Watch me!”

His eyes filled.

“Always.”

Maya took a breath.

Followed her instructor's guidance.

And began swimming.

She moved steadily across the shallow section.

Turned.

Then returned toward the steps.

When she stood again, she was laughing.

“DID YOU SEE?”

Andre laughed through tears.

“I saw!”

Tanya covered her mouth.

Maya grinned.

Then splashed a tiny amount of water toward her father.

He stepped backward dramatically.

“Hey!”

She giggled.

“Got you!”

For a moment, everyone laughed.

And Andre realized how long he'd waited to hear that particular sound beside the pool again.

Not the splash.

Not the water.

His daughter's laughter.

The kind that came without fear of someone appearing at the gate to tell her she wasn't allowed to enjoy her own home.

Later that afternoon, while the children ate fruit and sandwiches on the covered patio, Harold Pierce arrived carrying a small envelope.

He'd been invited but was running late.

Andre greeted him near the gate.

“Harold.”

The older man smiled.

“Beautiful afternoon.”

Andre nodded.

“Couldn't ask for better.”

Harold glanced toward the pool.

For a moment, his expression softened.

“Looks wonderful.”

“Thank you.”

They stood together for several seconds.

Then Harold handed Andre the envelope.

“Final association confirmation.”

Andre opened it.

Inside was a formal letter acknowledging the correction of the unsupported violation notices previously issued against his property.

The document confirmed that the disputed HOA charges associated with Cynthia's campaign had been withdrawn or otherwise resolved through the applicable review process.

It also clarified that any future drainage access or maintenance affecting private property would require proper authority and procedures.

Andre read it carefully.

Then looked toward Harold.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

The older man smiled faintly.

“I thought you'd appreciate having it in writing.”

Andre laughed softly.

“You know me well.”

Harold nodded.

“Apparently.”

For several seconds, they stood in silence.

Then Harold looked toward the swimming pool.

“I owe you an apology.”

Andre frowned.

“You?”

Harold nodded.

“I knew Cynthia was difficult. I knew she liked controlling things. But I didn't ask enough questions when the spending started looking unusual.”
