At first, I found nothing surprising.

My property had its own parcel identification.

Its boundaries were clearly recorded.

The original deed predated Willow Creek Estates by decades.

No recorded HOA declaration burdened my land.

The peach tree stood behind my boundary wall, rooted entirely within my property.

The community walking path ran nearby.

But according to the survey, the path itself was not where the HOA president believed it was.

That discovery would become important later.

For the moment, I simply sent the HOA a formal letter disputing its authority.

I attached a copy of my parcel map.

I included the relevant deed references.

And I requested that the association stop sending unsupported enforcement notices.

Two weeks passed.

Then the president appeared at my gate again.

This time she was furious.

She marched toward me while I was unloading fertilizer from my truck.

"Do you think you're some kind of lawyer?"

I set down the bag.

"No."

"Then stop sending threatening legal letters."

"I sent a property clarification."

"You accused the association of exceeding its authority."

"Because it did."

She laughed sharply.

"You have no idea how much influence this community has."

I looked at her.

"Influence over what?"

"County planning. Development approvals. Local businesses."

I nodded slowly.

"That's interesting."

She leaned closer.

"You'd be smart to cooperate."

"With what?"

"Our beautification plan."

I frowned.

"What beautification plan?"

She hesitated.

Then pointed toward the orchard.

"That section of land would be far more attractive as a landscaped buffer."

I looked behind me.

The peach trees.

The stone wall.

The narrow grassy strip.

The drainage ditch beyond.

"That's my orchard."

"Yes, but it borders an upscale community."

"And?"

She smiled as though explaining something obvious to a child.

"People pay a great deal of money not to look at agricultural clutter."

I stared at her.

Then laughed.

Not because I found it funny.
