Vanessa discovered Grant's uncertainty the following morning.

She entered his office carrying a folder of HOA correspondence.

“Priya is calling another meeting.”

Grant didn't look up.

“Let her.”

Vanessa stared.

“Excuse me?”

He closed his laptop.

“Stop fighting the board.”

Her face reddened.

“She's trying to remove me.”

Grant looked toward her.

“Then let the process happen.”

Vanessa stared.

For a moment, she seemed genuinely confused.

The man who had encouraged her to protect their financial interests was suddenly telling her to surrender control.

She stepped closer.

“What did Derek tell you?”

Grant said nothing.

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Grant.”

He looked toward her.

“Did you receive a material substitution summary during construction?”

She froze.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she answered.

“Several documents.”

“Did one of them raise questions about the source?”

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“Derek said everything was fine.”

“That wasn't my question.”

She turned sharply.

“Don't speak to me like that.”

Grant stood.

“Vanessa, I need to know what you signed.”

She clutched the folder.

For several seconds, her face moved through anger, fear, and disbelief.

Then she whispered.

“I approved the payment.”

Grant closed his eyes.

“The final payment?”

“Yes.”

“Without the material certification?”

She looked away.

For a moment, the silence answered for her.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You told me this development would make us wealthy.”

Grant stared.

“That doesn't excuse anything.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Oh, now it doesn't?”

Her voice rose.

“You wanted Marcus to grant the easement. You asked me to help with the board. You told me the drainage project needed to support the future access road.”

Grant looked toward the door.

Then back at her.

“I didn't tell you to use contaminated fill.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.

“I didn't know it was contaminated!”

He stared.

For a moment, he almost believed her.

Then he remembered the summary.

The questions about the source.

The engineer's refusal to sign.

And the way Vanessa dismissed Marcus's warnings without reading the full technical report.

He took a breath.

“Maybe you didn't know the laboratory result before he told you.”

Her expression tightened.

He continued.

“But you knew there were unanswered questions, and you treated them like obstacles instead of reasons to stop.”

Vanessa stared.

Then whispered.

“I went into that pool because I believed he was lying.”

Grant looked toward her.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then he answered.

“You believed what you needed to believe.”

The words struck her harder than he intended.

She looked away.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa gathered her papers.

“I won't let Marcus destroy everything we've built.”
