My wife wrapped an arm around her.
For a long time, we simply sat together.
Then our daughter asked whether the broken window could be repaired.
I smiled.
“Of course.”
She considered that.
Then looked toward the stuffed dolphin.
“Can we make the new glass stronger?”
I laughed softly.
“We'll ask the professionals what makes sense.”
She smiled a little.
Then leaned against my shoulder.
For the first time since the glass shattered, I felt the anger inside me settle.
I wanted consequences for the president.
I wanted the false agreement exposed.
I wanted the homeowners refunded.
But more than anything, I wanted my daughter to stop looking at our beautiful backyard as though it were dangerous.
That night, I sat beside my wife's desk while she reviewed the family's financial and property records.
She had already prepared a folder containing our deed, the original pool construction plans, prior HOA approvals, and the association correspondence.
She looked toward me.
“I'm sending all of this to the attorney tomorrow.”
I nodded.
“Good.”
She opened the security recording.
Then paused it at the moment the president picked up the stone.
For several seconds, my wife stared.
Then she whispered, “She really thought she could do this.”
I looked toward the screen.
The woman stood outside the gate in her expensive white clothes, preparing to throw a landscaping stone toward a home occupied by a family.
She looked furious.
But there was something else in her expression.
Determination.
Not the confused anger of someone reacting to an unexpected insult.
She'd arrived with a purpose.
My wife noticed it too.
She looked toward me.
“What if she came intending to force the gate open?”
I considered the question.
“We can't know what she intended beyond what she did and said.”
My wife nodded.
Then she looked toward the footage again.
“But she brought all those people.”
“Yes.”
“She told them the event was scheduled.”
“Yes.”
“And she demanded the code before she broke anything.”
I stared.
The sequence suddenly seemed important.
The president had arrived with paying customers.
She expected them to enter.
When I refused, she escalated.
The broken window created a disturbance she then used to claim that I was causing a security problem.
It might have been an impulsive act of rage.
Or it might have been part of an effort to justify emergency access.
Either way, the full sequence needed to be preserved.
I exported the original video through the camera system's supported process.
Saved the unaltered recording.
And ensured our attorney had access to the original evidence.
