"Two other notices were about the garage," he said.
"They were related."
"They weren't."
"The association determines what is related."
"No, Patricia."
Frank's voice remained calm.
"The bylaws determine what is related."
Ethan laughed.
"Here we go."
Frank looked at him.
"What?"
"Old-man lawyer talk."
Patricia smiled slightly.
"Frank, I strongly recommend that you cooperate."
"And I strongly recommend you leave my property."
Patricia held the violation notice inches from his face.
"Your refusal will be documented."
"Document it."
"It will be considered deliberate noncompliance."
"Document that too."
"And the association may take possession of the vehicle."
Frank's eyes narrowed.
"There it is."
Patricia lowered the paper.
"What?"
"The part you were waiting to say."
She smiled.
"The vehicle is subject to enforcement."
"Not possession."
"You don't get to interpret the rules."
"Neither do you."
Ethan suddenly stepped around his mother.
"Just give us the keys."
Frank looked at him.
"What?"
Ethan nodded toward the Harley.
"Mom already explained it."
"No, she didn't."
"She said the HOA is taking it."
Frank almost laughed.
Instead, he looked at Patricia.
"Did you tell your son the HOA has the legal authority to seize privately owned vehicles?"
Patricia's jaw tightened.
"I told him the association has enforcement authority."
"That's not the same thing."
"It's close enough."
"No."
Ethan stepped closer.
"Just give me the keys."
Frank's expression changed.
"Stay where you are."
Ethan smiled.
"Why?"
"Because you don't touch my property."
"I can move it for you."
"No."
"I know how to ride."
"I don't care."
Ethan reached toward the Harley.
Frank's voice sharpened.
"Don't."
Ethan grabbed the handlebar.
It happened quickly.
His fingers closed around the black grip.
His other hand hovered near the throttle.
His smile widened.
"Give me the keys."
Frank knocked his hand away.
"Touch my bike again and explain that theft attempt to the police yourself."
For one second, the entire driveway went silent.
Patricia's mouth dropped open.
Then she found her voice.
"You assaulted my son!"
"No."
"You struck him!"
"I removed his hand from my motorcycle."
"He has a right to enforce HOA rules!"
"He has no right to touch my motorcycle."
Ethan immediately pulled out his phone.
"I'm calling the police."
Frank stepped back.
"Go ahead."
Ethan tapped the screen.
"Yeah. I need police at Briarwood Estates."
Patricia moved beside him.
"Tell them he threatened you."
Frank looked at her.
"I didn't."
Ethan covered the phone with his hand.
"He threatened me."
"I told you to stop touching my bike."
"Exactly."
"That's not a threat."
