“Oh.”

Marcus almost laughed.

Martinez turned to Tyler.

No weapon drawn.

No aggressive posture.

“Anyone hurt?”

Everyone said no.

“Good.”

She looked toward Marcus.

“Tell me what happened.”

Brenda stepped forward.

“I am Tyler's mother and HOA president.”

Martinez nodded.

“Okay.”

“This is part of an ongoing dispute.”

Martinez looked toward Marcus.

He said nothing.

She returned to Brenda.

“What dispute?”

“Commercial vehicles at residential properties.”

Martinez glanced toward the Lamborghini.

Then Marcus's house.

“Was the car parked?”

“Yes.”

“Was anyone operating it?”

“No.”

She looked toward Tyler.

“Did the vehicle strike you?”

“No.”

“Did Mr. Reed threaten you?”

Tyler hesitated.

Brenda said:

“Yes.”

Martinez turned.

“Ma'am, I need him to answer.”

Brenda's face hardened.

Tyler looked toward Marcus.

Then the scratch.

Then Emily.

Then his mother.

“No.”

Brenda stared at him.

Martinez asked:

“No, he didn't threaten you?”

Tyler swallowed.

“No.”

Something changed.

Small.

Important.

Brenda said:

“Tyler.”

He looked toward her.

“He didn't.”

Marcus watched the boy's shoulders lower.

Like the truth physically weighed less.

Martinez nodded.

“Okay.”

“Did you damage the car?”

Brenda stepped forward.

“He's not answering.”

Tyler said:

“Yes.”

Brenda froze.

Marcus did too.

Tyler continued.

“I scratched it.”

Martinez remained calm.

“With what?”

Tyler held up the utility knife.

Brenda grabbed his wrist.

“Stop.”

Tyler pulled away.

Not violently.

Just enough.

“Mom.”

Her face changed.

He had never done that publicly.

Marcus saw it.

So did everyone else.

Tyler looked toward Martinez.

“I did it.”

She nodded.

“Why?”

Brenda said:

“Don't answer.”

Tyler closed his eyes.

Then:

“Because I was mad.”

“At Mr. Reed?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

Tyler looked toward his mother.

Brenda stared at him.

Marcus hated how visible the pressure was.

Tyler whispered:

“Because she said he was making us look stupid.”

Brenda's face emptied.

The street went silent again.

Marcus felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Martinez asked carefully:

“Who said that?”

Tyler swallowed.

“My mom.”

Brenda spoke immediately.

“That is completely out of context.”

Tyler looked at her.

“No.”
