Relationships may end.
You may work hard for something and still fail.
You may wake up one morning and realize the life you built no longer feels like the life you want.
None of that makes you weak.
Ask for help.
Rest.
Change direction.
Tell someone when you are hurting.
Being strong does not mean carrying everything alone.
Sometimes strength is simply being brave enough to let somebody help carry it with you.
I Hope You Never Let One Bad Chapter Tell You Who You Are
You will make mistakes.
I know this because you are human.
And because your grandmother has made plenty too.
There are things I wish I had handled differently.
Words I wish I had not said.
Chances I wish I had taken.
Times when fear made decisions for me.
People I misunderstood.
Moments when I should have apologized sooner.
Growing older gives you an uncomfortable amount of time to understand how imperfect you have been.
But it also teaches you something beautiful:
Very few mistakes deserve the rest of your life.
Learn.
Apologize when you need to.
Repair what you can.
Then keep going.
Don't spend twenty years punishing yourself for something the wiser version of you would never do again.
If the mistake taught you to become gentler, wiser, humbler, or more compassionate, then something worthwhile may still grow from it.
You are allowed to become someone different from the person who made your worst decision.
I Hope You Choose Kindness, but Not Because You Are Afraid to Say No
I hope you are kind.
I hope that deeply.
Our world will always need people who notice others.
But kindness is not the same as allowing everyone unlimited access to you.
You are allowed to have boundaries.
You are allowed to leave situations that repeatedly hurt you.
You are allowed to disappoint someone when the alternative is betraying yourself.
You can be generous without being used.
You can forgive someone without inviting the same behavior back into your life.
You can love people and still recognize that distance is sometimes necessary.
It took some of us a long time to learn that.
I hope you learn it sooner.
Have a soft heart.
Just don't confuse a soft heart with having no boundaries around it.
I Hope You Remember Where You Came From Without Feeling Trapped by It
There were people before you whose names you may barely know.
People who worked jobs you never saw.
People who raised children in houses that no longer belong to our family.
People who stretched grocery money.
People who worried late at night.
People who made sacrifices their children never completely understood.
Some had easier lives than others.
Some made mistakes that affected generations after them.
Some quietly changed the direction of our family for the better.
You carry pieces of all of that history.
But please understand something:
Your inheritance is not an instruction manual.
You don't have to repeat everything we did.
Keep what was good.
Question what was harmful.
Improve what we didn't know how to improve.
Every generation should be allowed to hand the next one something better.
