She was gentle in the kennel and generally predictable around other dogs.

Her biggest limitation was physical.

Arthritis had made her stiff, particularly after long periods of rest. She could still walk, but getting up and lying down required more care than it once had.

That was why an orthopedic bed was so useful for her.

A thick, supportive surface reduced the pressure of resting directly on hard flooring and made long periods of sleep easier on her aging joints.

When staff considered placing Finn with a calm companion, Mabel seemed like a reasonable dog to try.

The introduction was supervised.

Finn did not need an energetic playmate. In fact, a young dog constantly trying to wrestle or chase him could have made his situation more difficult.

He needed calm.

Mabel provided exactly that.

Something Changed When Mabel Was There

Finn's behavior was noticeably different with another dog in the kennel.

He could still become alert when people passed outside. He still needed time to adjust to the unfamiliar sounds and smells of rescue life.

But the prolonged panic associated with being alone began to ease.

He rested more readily.

He stayed close to Mabel.

And at night, he discovered her bed.

At first, there was nothing surprising about that.

Given a choice between a padded orthopedic bed and a harder surface, many dogs will choose the bed.

What caught staff's attention was Mabel's response.

She didn't crowd Finn off.

She didn't climb on top of him.

Instead, she stepped down.

The Bed Had Been There for Mabel, Too

That made the situation complicated.

It was touching to see Finn sleeping comfortably, but Mabel had arthritis. Staff did not want a senior dog repeatedly sleeping on hard concrete simply because a puppy had occupied the better resting spot.

A kennel arrangement that helped Finn by making Mabel physically uncomfortable was not a successful arrangement.

So they started paying closer attention.

Each evening, the same general pattern appeared.

Finn gravitated toward the orthopedic bed.
