There is a supportive edge against the wall.

A loose blanket has been positioned safely inside.

Maverick noses the blanket.

Pushes it toward his chest.

Turns twice.

Lies down.

His back rests against the raised edge.

The blanket folds around part of his body.

Maverick closes his eyes.

Nothing is torn.

The Following Night Isn't Perfect

He grabs the blanket and pulls.

For a moment, the old intensity returns.

Then he stops.

The blanket has bunched beside the wall.

Maverick steps into it.

Turns.

Settles.

The episode lasts less than a minute.

His Original Bed Destruction Starts Looking Different in Retrospect

What initially appeared to be a dog attacking his bedding had a clear endpoint all along.

Maverick was not satisfied when the bed was ruined.

He was satisfied when its shape changed.

Flat became piled.

Open became surrounded.

Center became wall.

Only then did sleep begin.

That does not tell staff where the need originated.

But it tells them what the behavior accomplishes now.

The Mystery Is Still Strongest on the Nights the Original Pattern Returns

Late one evening, Maverick is resting normally while the hallway remains active.

Then the final lights go out.

His head rises.

He walks directly to the bed he barely touched all day.

His teeth catch the edge.

He pulls hard.

The mattress folds.

Maverick grabs it again and drags it toward the back wall.

He paws at the center.

Pushes another section upward.

For several minutes, the kennel fills with the sound of fabric scraping across concrete.

Then Maverick stops.

The bed is no longer a bed.

It is a crumpled mound pressed into the corner.

Maverick lowers his head and pushes into the middle.

He disappears partly between the folds.

His body turns once.

Then again.

His back presses into one side of the pile.

The wall is directly behind the other.

Maverick pulls his legs beneath himself.

His nose tucks toward his chest.

Within minutes, the German Shepherd who seemed frantic enough to destroy everything around him is asleep.

And by morning, staff find him in exactly the place he spent the night creating.

Maverick has a bed available all day, yet he rarely wants it until darkness falls—and even then, he cannot seem to sleep in it until he has pulled the flat, open mattress apart and rebuilt it into something tight enough to surround him. Whatever he is trying to create each night, the strangest clue is that the “destruction” always stops at the exact moment Maverick finally feels able to close his eyes.
