The important questions come first.

Is the swelling resolving?

Are the wounds healing?

Is infection controlled if present?

Is the eye comfortable?

Can Milo eat?

Can he move his head normally?

Is he behaving more like himself?

There May Be Setbacks

Swelling can fluctuate.

A wound can produce drainage.

Milo may have a good morning and become more uncomfortable later.

Some injuries require repeated treatment.

Others reveal complications only after the initial examination.

A single photograph cannot determine the course of his recovery.

Neither can one good day.

Eventually, Holding His Head Straight Could Become the Biggest Change

Imagine Milo standing on his own.

Both eyes visible.

Head centered.

No deliberate tilt toward the healthier side.

He looks left.

Then right.

The movement is ordinary.

No hesitation.

No protective turn.

For another dog, nobody would notice.

For Milo, it would mean that an action once controlled by pain has become normal again.

But That Is Not the Milo in the Examination Room Yet

Right now, he is tucked against a person's chest.

His tiny body nearly disappears between two arms.

The fur around his injuries has been clipped away.

One side of his face is dramatically larger than the other.

A wound near his ear remains visible.

Milo keeps his head angled away from the swollen side.

His healthy eye watches the room.

The other eye is reduced to a narrow opening.

He tries to lift his head.

For several seconds, he manages it.

Then his neck lowers.

His face settles carefully against the support beneath him, turned so the swollen cheek does not take the pressure.

Milo does not know what the examination will reveal.

Neither does anyone else yet.

What happened behind that convenience store remains uncertain.

What lies beneath the swelling is still being determined.

And the smallest feature on Milo's injured face—the thin sliver of an eye he can barely open—may be the one that matters most.

Until the swelling comes down enough to reveal what is underneath, the biggest question is not when Milo's face will look normal again, but whether the eye almost hidden inside it has escaped the worst of the damage.
