That evening, they returned to the boardinghouse.

Esther had prepared supper and saved them places near the stove. Several travelers sat at the long dining table, discussing freight delays, cattle prices, and the weather.

Martha entered quietly.

She noticed a few people looking toward her.

For a moment, she felt the familiar urge to lower her head.

Then Esther smiled.

"Miss Higgins. Come sit. I've made enough stew for half the territory."

Martha laughed softly.

She sat beside Caleb.

For the first time since arriving in Bitter Creek, she felt welcome.

After supper, Esther brought tea.

She looked toward Martha.

"Are you and Mr. Montgomery planning to marry?"

Martha froze.

Caleb set down his cup.

For a moment, neither answered.

Then Caleb looked toward Martha.

"That's her decision."

Esther raised an eyebrow.

Martha stared at him.

He continued.

"We made an arrangement before either of us understood what it meant. I won't hold her to vows she doesn't wish to make."

The boardinghouse keeper studied him.

Then she smiled faintly.

"That sounds wiser than most men who come through here."

Caleb looked embarrassed.

Martha lowered her eyes.

But her heart was pounding.

She'd never heard him speak that way about their future.

Not as a contract.

Not as an obligation.

As a choice.

Later that night, Martha sat beside the small window in her boardinghouse room, watching snow fall over the street.

She thought about Caleb.

His awkward apologies.

The wooden sewing box.

The warm stockings.

The way he'd offered his hand without demanding she take it.

She also thought about the scars, the photograph, and the fact that he shared blood with the man who hurt her.

The feelings were tangled.

She didn't know how to separate fear from hope.

Then someone knocked softly.

"Miss Higgins?"

It was Esther.

Martha opened the door.

The older woman stood holding a folded quilt.

"Thought you might need another blanket."

Martha smiled.

"Thank you."

Esther stepped inside just long enough to place it on the chair.

Then she looked toward Martha.

"May I say something?"

Martha nodded.

Esther hesitated.

"Caleb Montgomery isn't an easy man."

Martha smiled faintly.

"I've noticed."

The older woman chuckled.

"But I've known him for years. I've seen him help people when nobody was watching and walk away before they could thank him."

Martha looked thoughtful.

Esther continued.

"That doesn't erase the foolish things he says. But a man willing to admit he's wrong is rarer than a man who never makes a mistake."

Martha stared.

Then she asked quietly, "Do you think people truly change?"

Esther considered the question.

"Some do. But don't decide from what they promise. Decide from what they keep doing after the promise is made."

Martha nodded slowly.

The older woman smiled.

Then she left.

Martha stood beside the window for a long time.
