Caleb leaned closer slowly, giving her time to change her mind.

She lifted her face.

Their first kiss was gentle, warm, and unhurried.

When they separated, Martha rested her forehead against his.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then she whispered, "I never thought I'd have this."

Caleb held her hand.

"Neither did I."

They stood beside the creek while the evening light faded across the mountains.

And for the first time, Martha understood that love didn't have to arrive as a demand.

Sometimes it arrived as a question.

And the freedom to answer.

They married in late spring.

The ceremony took place beside the cabin, beneath the same pine trees that had sheltered the homestead through winter. Esther came from Bitter Creek carrying flowers and enough food for twice the number of guests. The Porter family arrived early, and Jonah helped Caleb arrange wooden benches along the clearing.

Sheriff Price attended.

So did the county clerk, several ranchers, and families who had come to know Martha through her bookkeeping work.

The preacher traveled up from town on a bright morning, carrying his Bible beneath one arm.

Martha wore a simple ivory dress that she'd sewn herself.

It had a modest neckline, soft sleeves, and a full skirt that moved comfortably around her body. She had chosen the design carefully, not to hide herself, but because it made her feel beautiful.

Her dark hair was arranged in a loose bun with small wildflowers tucked near the back.

Caleb wore a clean brown suit, polished boots, and the same silver ring Martha had given him several days earlier.

When he saw her approaching, his expression changed.

He looked as though he'd forgotten how to breathe.

Martha smiled.

For a moment, she remembered the stagecoach.

The laughter.

The rejection.

Then she looked at the man standing beneath the pine trees.

And the memory loosened its hold.

The preacher began the ceremony.

Caleb held Martha's hands.

When it came time to exchange vows, he spoke slowly.

"I cannot promise that winters will be easy," he said. "I cannot promise I will never make another mistake."

Martha smiled through tears.

Caleb continued.

"But I promise that I will listen when you speak, stand beside you when life becomes difficult, and remember that love is something we choose every day."

His voice trembled.

"I promise you honesty, kindness, and a home where you never have to earn the right to belong."

Martha's eyes filled.

Then she spoke.

"I promise to share the work and the joy, the difficult seasons and the beautiful ones. I promise to tell you the truth, even when it is hard, and to remember that neither of us needs to be perfect to be worthy of love."

She smiled.

"And I promise never to let you forget that you're a better man when you ask for help."

Several guests laughed.

Caleb laughed too.
