Then he added, "Only if you want to. Esther says you can stay here as long as you need, and I'll help with your passage wherever you choose."

Martha looked toward the window.

Snow covered the street.

A wagon moved slowly past the general store.

And beyond the town, the mountains rose pale against the winter sky.

For weeks, she'd been frightened that the cabin might become another place where she was trapped by a man's decisions.

Now she was being offered the freedom to leave.

And somehow, that made her want to return.

She looked at Caleb.

Then she smiled.

"Yes."

He stared.

She continued.

"I'd like to go home."

Caleb felt a warmth spread through him.

But before he could speak, Martha added something else.

"Not because I have nowhere else to go."

He nodded.

"I know."

She looked directly at him.

"Because I want to."

For a moment, Caleb couldn't breathe.

Then he smiled.

A genuine, open smile.

Martha had never seen it quite like that before.

And she realized that the man who had once rejected her on a public street had become someone whose happiness mattered deeply to her.

They left Bitter Creek two days later.

Esther packed food for the journey and hugged Martha at the boardinghouse door. Sheriff Price wished them safe travels, while the county clerk promised to send any relevant notices through the proper channels.

Martha stood beside the wagon, looking back toward the street where she'd first arrived.

She remembered the laughter.

The humiliation.

The cold.

And the terrible certainty that she'd made a mistake traveling west.

Then she looked toward Caleb.

He was adjusting the harness, his dark hair falling across his forehead as he worked.

He glanced up.

"Ready?"

Martha smiled.

"Yes."

He held out his hand.

She took it.

And together, they began the journey back toward the mountain cabin.

This time, Martha wasn't a stranger hoping to be accepted.

She was a woman who had spoken the truth, made her own decision, and discovered that the road home could lead toward something she hadn't dared to imagine.

Love.

The cabin looked different when they returned.

Nothing important had changed. The wooden porch still needed repairs, the barn leaned slightly into the wind, and snow had collected along the northern wall. The same iron stove stood beside the table, and the same wool blankets covered the narrow bed.

Yet when Martha stepped through the doorway, she felt something she hadn't experienced during her first arrival.

Belonging.

Caleb carried her carpetbag inside and placed it beside the bed. Then he went toward the stove, checked the kindling, and began preparing a fire. Martha stood near the table, looking at the familiar sewing basket and the wooden box he'd made for her.

She touched the lid.

It was exactly where she'd left it.

Caleb looked up.

"Everything all right?"

Martha smiled.

"Yes."

He nodded toward the pantry.
