I looked away.

“Nia misses them.”

“Could they see each other?”

I hesitated.

“I don't know.”

“Ask therapist.”

“I will.”

We eventually arranged it.

Neutral park.

Terrence present.

Me present.

No Renee.

Zoe ran to Nia.

They hugged for so long I had to look away.

Malik stood awkwardly.

Then handed Nia a bracelet.

“You left it.”

She smiled.

“Thanks.”

They played.

Children can carry adult conflict without understanding why they are suddenly denied people they love.

I was determined not to use separation as punishment.

That did not mean pretending nothing happened.

It meant drawing boundaries around adults while letting children keep safe relationships.

Six months after that afternoon with the bucket, the divorce became final.

The judge asked routine questions.

Was marriage irretrievably broken?

Yes.

Did I understand settlement?

Yes.

Renee sat across courtroom.

When it ended, we walked outside separately.

She called my name.

I stopped.

She approached.

“I wanted to say something.”

I waited.

She looked thinner.

Tired.

“I’m not going to ask you to change anything.”

“Okay.”

“I’m sorry.”

I nodded.

“For Nia.”

“Yes.”

“For you.”

“Yes.”

“For Malik and Zoe.”

“Yes.”

“For making my jealousy into rules.”

That sentence surprised me.

She continued:

“My therapist says I used authority to solve insecurity.”

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like therapy language.”

“It is.”

She smiled briefly.

Then serious again.

“I kept trying to make Nia respect me enough that I would stop feeling like an outsider.”

“But every time she resisted, I became more controlling.”

“I told myself you were too soft because of Alana.”

“I thought if I could make Nia behave perfectly, then I would feel like her mother.”

“You can't force that.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.
