He lowers himself first.
His chest reaches the floor.
Only then does his muzzle move toward the bowl.
Lying Down to Drink May Be Nugget's Way of Conserving Strength
Standing requires continuous muscular effort.
A severely weakened dog may find it easier to drink while lying down.
That does not automatically mean Nugget has a neurological problem or cannot stand at all.
He can get there.
He simply appears unable to maintain the position comfortably for long.
So he removes one job from the equation.
He lies down.
Then he drinks.
But Even That Is Sometimes Too Much
Nugget's tongue touches the water.
Lap.
Pause.
Lap.
Lap.
Then nothing.
His eyes close.
His chin settles onto the stainless-steel rim.
The muscles holding his head up seem to switch off before Nugget has decided he is finished.
His Face Slowly Moves Closer to the Water
That is where the behavior becomes more than heartbreaking.
It becomes a safety concern.
A profoundly tired or weak dog should not be left in a position where his nose or mouth could slip into water while he is asleep.
Nugget's short Pekingese-type muzzle makes the setup even more important.
The bowl must allow safe access without creating a situation where exhaustion leaves his airway dangerously close to the surface.
The Bowl Setup Has to Work for Nugget's Body
A different height may help.
So might a shallower, stable vessel positioned according to veterinary guidance.
It should not tip easily.
It should not force Nugget to stretch his neck excessively.
And he should be monitored closely while his weakness remains severe.
Fresh water needs to be accessible.
But accessibility means more than placing water somewhere inside the kennel.
Nugget has to be physically capable of using it safely.
His Breathing Matters Too
Pekingese and Pekingese mixes may have brachycephalic features, meaning a shortened skull and muzzle.
Individual anatomy varies, and Nugget's breathing needs to be assessed as his own case.
Weakness, stress, heat, positioning, and upper-airway anatomy can all affect respiratory effort.
If his breathing becomes labored, noisy beyond his normal baseline, unusually slow, or otherwise concerning, that deserves immediate veterinary attention.
Falling asleep over a water bowl should never be assumed to be merely cute exhaustion.
Why Is Nugget So Weak?
There may not be one answer.
Dehydration itself can contribute to weakness.
Poor nutritional condition can reduce muscle strength.
Pain and skin disease can interfere with sleep.
Infection or other systemic illness may be involved.
Anemia, metabolic abnormalities, organ disease, or other medical problems could also contribute depending on his examination and testing.
Nugget's body needs to be considered as a whole.
His Skin Is Not a Separate Cosmetic Problem
The missing fur around Nugget's face and neck changes his appearance dramatically.
But the important issue is what is happening underneath.
Hair loss can have many causes.
Parasites.
Allergic disease.
Skin infection.
