The familiar posture returns.

That does not erase the previous evening.

His energy may fluctuate as his body recovers.

What matters is the overall pattern.

Gradually, the Better Moments Become More Frequent

Nugget drinks and walks away.

Then does it again later.

One day he remains standing through the entire drink.

Another day he lies down first but raises his head when finished.

His water bowl slowly stops functioning as a place where his exhausted body collapses.

It becomes just a water bowl.

That is the kind of ordinary change everyone wants.

His Weight Will Tell Only Part of the Story

Numbers matter.

But Nugget's function matters too.

A higher weight is encouraging if it reflects appropriate recovery.

So is improved muscle condition.

But caregivers also want to see a dog who can stand comfortably, drink, eat, rest, and move without every basic activity draining him.

Recovery means giving Nugget usable strength.

Not simply making the scale change.

Eventually, His Face May Look Completely Different

Healthy skin could replace inflamed skin.

Fur may return around his neck and legs if the underlying condition allows it.

His body may fill out.

His eyes may appear brighter.

Someone seeing Nugget months later might struggle to recognize the fragile dog who once fell asleep over his water.

But the most important transformation may be much less dramatic.

Nugget walks to his bowl.

Drinks.

Raises his head.

Turns around.

And walks away.

Tonight, He Is Not There Yet

The medical kennel is quiet.

Nugget wakes on his bedding.

His tongue briefly touches his nose.

He looks toward the water.

Then he pushes himself up.

His front legs tremble.

Nugget takes several slow steps.

He reaches the bowl.

His body lowers to the floor before he begins drinking.

Lap.

Lap.

Pause.

Another lap.

His eyelids become heavy.

His head sinks.

The edge of the bowl catches his chin.

Nugget's eyes close completely.

His muzzle hangs just above the water.

For a moment, the dog who arrived dangerously depleted is asleep in the middle of trying to satisfy one of the most basic needs his body has.

Nugget finally has fresh water within reach—but until he can drink without becoming too exhausted to lift his face away from the bowl, the bigger question is not how thirsty he is anymore, but why his weakened body still runs out of strength before the thirst does.
