Was she beginning to move around the kennel voluntarily?

Would she approach familiar caregivers?

Did she spend less time keeping her body tightly folded against the wall?

Those changes could not erase what happened before she arrived.

They did show what was happening now.

Penny was becoming familiar with her surroundings.

There Are Still Days When the Old Pattern Returns

A louder door opening can bring Penny's head up immediately.

An unfamiliar person entering the room may keep her attention longer.

Sometimes staff still find the blanket pulled toward the wall.

Penny curls herself against it and watches the entrance from there.

Nobody treats that as failure.

Adjustment is not a straight line.

And Penny is a senior dog who has gone through two major environmental changes in a short period: first being left in the emptied home, then being removed and brought into shelter care.

The goal is not to make her stop choosing the corner.

The goal is to make sure the corner is no longer the only place where she can rest.

Penny Is Still Waiting for What Comes Next

Her caregivers cannot change the image animal control encountered when they entered that house.

A home that had been cleared out.

A family already gone.

And Penny still inside.

But the dog who arrived at the shelter underweight, dehydrated and badly matted now has people checking on her every day.

She has a routine.

She has comfortable places to rest.

She has caregivers whose footsteps and voices are becoming familiar.

And little by little, the sound of a door opening is beginning to mean more than uncertainty.

Penny Still Lifts Her Head Sometimes

The room door opens.

Penny is curled on her blanket.

Her eyes open.

Her golden, aging face rises from the bedding.

She watches the person who has just entered.

Sometimes she keeps watching until they leave.

But other times she recognizes them.

Her head slowly lowers again.

And Penny goes back to sleep before the door ever closes.

She was found curled inside an empty house after the people she knew had already moved away.

Now Penny still listens when a door opens.

The difference is that, in this place, the people who walk through it keep coming back.
