That sentence became the sound inside Nathan’s head.

Please save my son.

He had heard versions of it before. Mothers on traffic stops after crashes. Fathers outside apartment fires. Grandmothers in front yards while paramedics worked on children too still to be sleeping. But something about Elena’s voice was different. It was not just fear. It was guilt, desperation, and the unbearable knowledge that she had run away from the house only because running away was the fastest way to bring help back.

At the porch, Nathan paused beside the open door.

The wooden frame near the lock was splintered.

Not just open.

Forced.

Jenna saw it too.

“Forced entry,” she whispered.

Nathan nodded.

Inside the house, something scraped across the floor.

Then a child cried.

It was faint but unmistakable.

High, broken, trying to be quiet and failing.

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“Police!” he shouted. “Marcus, this is the police. Come out with your hands visible!”

No answer.

The house smelled like dinner ruined by violence.

Tomato sauce. Garlic. broken glass. warm food cooling on tile. There was a pot on the stove, sauce splattered across the cabinet doors and floor. A plate lay shattered near the kitchen island. A child’s plastic cup had rolled under a chair. In the living room, a lamp had fallen sideways, its shade dented. A framed family photo lay face-down near the hallway entrance.

Nathan stepped in first.

Jenna followed, covering the opposite angle.

The living room was small. Brown couch, faded rug, toys stacked in a corner, a folded blanket over the armrest. A cartoon still played silently on the television. The cheerful colors on the screen looked obscene against the chaos.

“Marcus!” Jenna called. “We know you’re inside. Come out now.”

A man’s voice came from down the hallway.

“You don’t know anything.”

Not loud.

Not panicked.

Cold.

Nathan turned toward the sound.

The hallway was narrow, with three doors visible: one bedroom open on the left, bathroom door partly closed on the right, and a laundry room at the end with the door shut.

From behind that laundry room door came another muffled sob.

Mateo.

Nathan felt Jenna shift beside him.
