“I am not resisting. You're hurting me.”

The younger officer stepped closer.

“Sergeant, maybe we should verify the receipt first.”

The older officer turned his head.

“Do your job.”

The younger man’s jaw tightened.

The woman looked at the manager.

“You put that there.”

The manager laughed.

“That’s quite an accusation.”

“You handled my bag after my purchase.”

“To package your merchandise.”

“You took it away from the sales associate.”

The manager folded his arms.

“And?”

“And now something I never touched is suddenly inside it.”

The older officer pulled out handcuffs.

The Black woman’s voice sharpened.

“You are not putting me in cuffs over something you haven’t even investigated.”

“Hands behind your back.”

“No.”

The officer seized her elbow and shoved her against the glass again.

This time her handbag slid from her shoulder and hit the sidewalk.

The younger officer flinched.

“Sergeant.”

The older officer snapped, “Pick up her purse.”

The younger officer did not move immediately.

The Black woman turned her face enough to look at him.

“You know this is wrong.”

That sentence landed harder than shouting would have.

The younger officer swallowed.

His partner pulled one cuff around the woman’s wrist.

The metal clicked.

Several people had phones out now.

The boutique manager saw them.

He stepped backward toward the store.

The woman noticed.

“Don't let him leave.”

The older officer laughed.

“Ma’am, you're the one in handcuffs.”

The woman stared at the boutique manager.

“He knows exactly what he did.”

Then tires chirped against the curb.

Everyone turned.

A black luxury SUV stopped behind the cruiser.

The rear door opened before the vehicle had fully settled.

A Black American man in his mid-thirties stepped onto the sidewalk wearing a charcoal suit without a tie, white shirt open at the collar, and a dark overcoat thrown over one arm. He had a lean athletic build, close-cut black hair, a neatly trimmed beard, and the expression of a man whose fear had already transformed into focus.

The woman’s breath caught.

Her husband.

He saw the cuff.

The red mark around her wrist.

The shopping bag scattered across the pavement.

Then the older officer’s hand gripping her arm.

His face changed.

He walked directly toward them.

The older officer raised one hand.

“Stay back.”

The husband stopped six feet away.

He did not raise his voice.

“Take your hand off my wife.”

The officer’s expression hardened.

“This is a police investigation.”

“I can see that.”

“Then stay out of it.”

The husband looked at his wife.

“Are you hurt?”

“My shoulder.”

“Anything else?”

“Not yet.”

That answer made his jaw tighten.

The boutique manager stepped forward, apparently deciding the husband was simply an angry spouse.

“Sir, your wife was found with unpaid merchandise.”

The husband looked at him.

“You’re the manager?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

The manager frowned.

“Good?”
