The older officer’s jaw tightened.

The younger officer stepped closer.

“She isn't under arrest.”

The sergeant looked as though he wanted to argue.

Then noticed every phone pointed toward them.

He unlocked the cuff.

The Black woman immediately pulled her arm against her chest.

Her husband stepped forward.

The older officer moved as if to block.

The younger officer moved between them.

“Enough.”

That single word changed the scene.

The older officer stared at his junior partner.

“What did you say?”

“I said enough.”

The younger officer turned toward the Black woman.

“Ma’am, I'm sorry.”

She looked at him.

“You held my other arm.”

His face fell.

“Yes.”

“Remember that before you decide you were just standing here.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

The boutique manager tried to slip back through the door.

The husband pointed.

“Officer.”

The younger officer turned.

The manager stopped.

The husband held up the tablet.

“There’s more.”

The manager’s hand remained on the boutique door.

The older sergeant finally seemed to understand that the scene had changed beyond repair.

“What more?”

The husband swiped.

Folders appeared.

Dates.

Transaction numbers.

Video thumbnails.

Seven incidents.

All involving customers accused of walking out with merchandise they claimed not to have taken.

Six were Black women.

One was a Latino man.

The same manager appeared in every clip.

The younger officer’s face changed.

The husband said:

“This isn't the first one.”

The boutique manager whispered:

“You have no authority to show that.”

The husband almost laughed.

“No.”

“But the corporate counsel standing two blocks away does.”

The manager looked toward the street.

Two more vehicles were approaching.

Not police.

Corporate investigators.

Outside counsel.

The husband continued.

“And by the time they arrive, you may want your own attorney.”

The older officer looked suddenly uncomfortable.

The Black woman noticed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

She turned toward him.

“You know him.”

The sergeant frowned.

“What?”

“You know the manager.”

“No.”

Her husband looked at his tablet again.

He had seen something she had not.

A ledger of incident reports.

Officer names.

The same sergeant responded to five of the seven prior boutique theft calls.

The husband slowly raised his eyes.

“Oh.”

The sergeant’s shoulders changed.

The Black woman saw it.
