The husband lifted the tablet in his left hand.

“Because I need you to look at something.”

The older officer stepped closer.

“Put that down.”

“No.”

“I said—”

The husband turned the screen.

A paused security image filled it.

The boutique counter.

The Black woman standing at the register.

The sales associate holding tissue paper.

And the manager’s hand entering the shopping bag.

The manager went completely still.

The younger officer leaned closer.

The older officer’s face changed.

The husband tapped the screen.

The video moved.

On the recording, the Black woman handed over her card.

The transaction completed.

The sales associate wrapped the purchased jacket.

The boutique manager stepped behind the counter.

He dismissed the associate with a gesture.

Then, while the Black woman looked toward the jewelry display, he reached under the counter.

He removed the black leather wallet.

He slipped it beneath the tissue paper.

The manager standing on the sidewalk stopped breathing.

The younger officer whispered:

“What the hell?”

The older officer looked from the tablet to the manager.

Then back.

The Black woman’s voice was very quiet.

“I told you.”

Her husband did not look triumphant.

He looked furious.

The boutique manager found his voice.

“That footage is incomplete.”

The husband tapped another icon.

A point-of-sale log appeared.

The planted wallet’s inventory number.

Its status.

Removed from active sales inventory eighteen minutes before the woman entered the store.

Then manually reactivated three minutes after her purchase.

The user credential attached to the change belonged to the manager.

The younger officer stared.

The manager backed toward the boutique door.

“This is confidential store information. How do you have that?”

The husband finally looked directly at him.

“Because your corporate board hired my firm six weeks ago.”

Silence.

The manager’s eyes widened.

The husband continued.

“We maintain the independent forensic mirror of your security and inventory systems.”

The older officer’s hand loosened around the woman’s arm.

The husband’s voice remained controlled.

“The footage you deleted from the local recorder seven minutes ago still exists on our server.”

The boutique manager’s face drained.

The Black woman stared at her husband.

“You were auditing this store?”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

“You never told me.”

“Confidentiality agreement.”

Her anger flashed despite everything.

“You knew this place was being investigated?”

“I knew the chain had inventory irregularities.”

“This location?”

“I couldn't disclose which locations were flagged.”

She stared.

The emotional complication could wait.

The younger officer pointed toward the cuff.

“Sergeant.”

The older officer did not move.

“Sergeant.”

This time firmer.

The older officer looked at his partner.

“What?”

“Take it off.”

The sidewalk became silent.
